HMC 2020 GRAND PRIZE/ PRADA JAPAN AWARD

床革（トコガワ）を使用したシリーズ。3点全て床革からつくられている。

革を漉く際に「床革」がでる。
副産物の床革は銀面（通常使用される表面）付きの革に比べ、強度の弱さや扱いにくさから、
処分もしくは芯材として使われることが多い素材だが、独自の面白さがある。
染めやすさや、磨きによる艶出しのしやすさなど、「床革だからできること」を追及し、新しいデザインの革を作った。
通常は何枚かの革を縫い合わせて作り出す表面のデザインも、より素材の可能性を感じてもらうために、あえて一枚革の面で表現した。
加工を加えることで、ヌード色のバッグが全く異なる表情を持ち、生まれ変わる。

Each piece is created from the same "split leather" material.

The "Nude" bag is the colour and texture of the raw material. 
While the other two are also created from the same leather, I have processed them differently to add a new look.

 "Leather" was the theme for HMC bag course 2020 (graduation work).
Typically, leather needs to be sliced in layers, as raw animal skin is too thick to use for bag making. The leather we see used most frequently is the top layer and the bottom "split" is often disposed, as it is weaker and lower quality in comparison. FACELESS is a series of bags, literally missing the top "face" layer. Through hand-dyeing and polishing, I have added "faces" and characterised each bag differently. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

審査員評

床革の特徴に着目し、染めや磨きなど加工を工夫することで新たな表情を生み出し、作品として見事に表現していた点が特に印象的でした。植物タンニンなめしや床革を用いることに、サスティナブルへの関心も伝わってきます。本革に比べると、どうしてもカジュアルに見られてしまう床革ですが、革の特性を引き出し、それを存分に活かしたデザインにすることでファッション性の高い作品になっています。

「社会の光から生まれる影に、光を当てること」に真正面から向き合った作品。光があれば影があるように、美しいものの裏側に必ずある部分にフォーカスし、自身のクリエーションを通じてとても美しい作品へと昇華させました。レザーという素材の縛りがあるなかで、それを微塵も感じさせない表現力に感服せざるを得ません。バッグの本質、役割は何かを改めて考えさせられる中で、頭一つ抜けた作品でした。

市場に出回っている革すべてが副産物とは限らないことを知り、革製品は基本的には作りません。オーストリッチの場合、その食肉を販売している農家でも、革はクオリティが低かったり、傷がある事を理由に、利用できないまま廃棄されてしまう革もたくさんあると知りました。そういった革が余っていて、使いみちを探している農家の方から依頼をいただき進めたプロジェクトです。日本の自然をテーマに、海外の展示に向けてデザインを考えました。

 This was a special project many by-product leather from the ostrich meat industry do not meet required standards in bag making due to its scars, weakness, etc.  Many are still usable, but are not often made available for purchase. These bags were experimentally designed with the intention of finding new expressions using ostrich leather parts, and to use every available part of them with minimal waste.

Each piece is inspired by japanese nature: bamboo forest, sea, volcanic mountains. All leathers were dyed to specific colors to fit each design.

This was a special project designed with hopes to raise awareness of the current situation of discarded leathers and give new value to "waste". We do not sell leather items now or in the future.
